Minnesota’s Wild and Timberwolves each have reason for optimism heading into their 2023-24 seasons, but both teams this month introduced new uniforms that hearken back to the past.

The Timberwolves, celebrating their 35th anniversary this season, unveiled their Classic Edition uniforms for the season. They feature a modern cut crafted from contemporary athletic materials. They’ll have the team name on the front in the team’s original font from 1989-1996, the original logo featuring “Old Ship,” a 1990s Nike swoosh on the left shoulder and, in a nod to the present, an Aura patch featuring the team’s jersey partner.

“We’re taking it back to ’89 as we go old school cool in celebration of 35 years of Timberwolves basketball,” says Mike Grahl, chief marketing officer for the Wolves and Lynx. “We’re excited for fans to experience the blend of our past with our present, as we build toward the future together.

The Wild’s “78’s” honor the heritage of the Minnesota North Stars, introducing uniforms with a Kelly Green base and bright yellow striping like the Wild’s predecessors did in the late-1970s.

“Our primary home and road jerseys are as popular as ever with our fans,” said John Maher, senior brand advisor for the Wild. “They also let yes know last season that they still loved this legacy look so we decided to keep it in our mix as a new alternate jersey, with some updated ‘State of Hockey’ details.”

The 78’s are based on the Wild’s Reverse Retro uniforms from 2020-21 and 2022-23 that were created in collaboration with Adidas and the NHL.

The Wild will wear these alternates 15 times during the season. The Wolves will wear their 89-themed uniforms 25 times, 14 on the road and 11 at home.
