The Minnesota Timberwolves and Lynx pledged as an organization to fight racism and help unite its local communities in the wake of George Floyd’s death.

The team announced the first of those steps Wednesday, unveiling a partnership with the Minneapolis Foundation aimed at addressing systemic inequities and translating community anger into action.

The partnership will include participation by Timberwolves Head Coach Ryan Saunders and Lynx Head Coach and General Manager Cheryl Reeve. They will both serve as leaders on an advisory committee overseeing disbursement of the Fund for Safe Communities, which will aim to prevent future violence, reform the criminal justice system and provide healing for communities affected by Floyd’s death at the hands of four Minneapolis police officers.

Another advisory committee will be compiled of diverse youth from Minneapolis, according to the team. The committees will work collectively to disburse funds starting as early as next week.

“This is a moment where we all need to step into some bigger, bolder leadership,” says Chanda Smith Baker, senior vice president of impact at The Minneapolis Foundation. “We need allies in this work and we are excited the Timberwolves and Lynx have decided to step into this partnership, dig deep into understanding the complexity of the inequalities, and help us drive toward solutions that ensure senseless tragedies rooted in racism never happen again.”

The teams say additional programming and initiatives will be announced in the future, as well.
