COVID-19 may have prevented the St. Paul Saints from starting the baseball season on time, but it’s not stopping the organization from drawing fans to CHS Field in downtown St. Paul.

The organization announced Tuesday that starting on Monday, June 15, the Pop-Up Café will open for lunch so diners can enjoy a unique outdoor seating experience at the ballpark.

It’ll be open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. with tables set up on the concourse of the ballpark near the front gates located on Broadway Street.

The menu, provided by the Saints’ food and beverage partner Professional Sports Catering, will include everything from traditional ballpark fare such as hot dogs, hamburgers and french fries to sandwiches and European dishes. Certain adult beverages will be available, as well.

“Our players aren’t able to take the field yet, so until they are we’ll find creative ways to make sure CHS Field is open and available to our community this summer,” says Derek Sharrer, Saints vice president and general manager.

Sean Aronson, the team’s vice president and director of media relations and broadcasting, says this is not a permanent addition. While it might become a summer feature, it’s primarily an offering aimed at getting fans to the ballpark until baseball returns.

“There are plenty of great restaurants and establishments here in Lowertown so we’re not looking to compete with them,” he says.

The team continues to consider other ideas for opening the ballpark during this COVID-19-driven down time. Aronson says the Saints would like to incorporate existing business partners into some kind of promotion, perhaps around Friday night fireworks.

“Those ideas are still being formed” he says.

In the meantime, the Saints will abide by social distancing guidelines in determining capacity and seating at the cafe. Reservations are required and can be made at saintsbaseball.com.
