The Minnesota Sports Facilities Authority, KultureCity and 3M, the official science partner of the Minnesota Vikings, have collaborated on a sensory inclusive space at U.S. Bank Stadium.
KultureCity, a nonprofit from Birmingham, AL, designed the room to cater to the needs of fans with autism, down syndrome, post-traumatic stress disorder, dementia and other conditions that require a safe and soothing atmosphere.
The organization is partnering with Fraser Pediatric Therapy to ensure the room will be staffed with two licensed behavioral specialists for every Vikings home game.
“Our continued focus is on elevating the fan experience for all Minnesota Vikings fans,” says Kevin Warren, the team’s chief operating officer. “Games should be as accessible as possible, particularly for fans with special needs, and we are proud to work with organizations like KultureCity to take this significant step forward.”
The sound protected space used to be the HCMC 3M First-Aid Station. It’s located on the Upper Concourse near the southwest escalator behind Section 346. The room includes a sensory active wall displays, sensory toys, low lighting, bean bag chairs and sensory bags. 3M provided ear plugs and noise cancelling headphones and there is a single-use bathroom connected.
The team, U.S. Bank Stadium Manager SMG and security provider Whelan Event Staffing Services went through staff training with KultureCity to ensure the venue can be deemed “sensory inclusive.”
