The American Hockey League’s Iowa Wild cleaned up with five awards at the annual AHL Board of Governors meeting, including being named Team of the Year.
The Wild also claimed awards for Outstanding Fan Experience, Social Media Department of the Year, and Best Unique Game Operations Promotion, for its Raisin’ Canes Tug of War, where fans use the Iowa Wild app to pick a side and play tug of war against other fans in the arena. The winning team gets a discount at Raisin Canes the next day if they show their ticket.
President Todd Frederickson also was honored with the Thomas Ebright Award in recognition of his career contributions to the league.
The Team of the Year designation arose from the team’s success on and off the ice. The Iowa Wild set more than 50 team records on the ice and made a trip to the Calder Cup Playoffs for the first time.
The success carried over off the ice, as more than 270,000 fans attended games at Wells Fargo Arena. The team set records for group and overall ticket sales, was innovative in its digital and social media business practices and maintained strong ties to the Des Moines, Iowa community, according to a news release.
