Jerry Kill, who coached the Gophers football team from 2011 to 2015 before health struggles forced his resignation, has taken over responsibilities for athletics at Southern Illinois University.

Kill coached the football team there from 2001 to 2007, leadnig the Salukis to five consecutive NCAA playoff appearances. He had returned to the school as an ambassador in March.

He assumed the role previously held by Tommy Bell on April 26.

Kill was named Big Ten Coach of the Year in 2014 and led the Gophers to three bowl games during his tenure. Since leaving, he has been an associate athletics director at Kansas State in 2016 and offensive coordinator at Rutgers in 2017.

“SIU is a special place and I’ve always valued the warmth and support of the Southern Illinois community,” he said in March, when he returned to campus. “I’m excited to contribute to the university’s future in any way possible.”
