part of “Flip Saunders Night” during the team’s game against the Los Angeles Lakers on Feb. 15.

The Timberwolves Fast Break Foundation will make a donation to the Flip Saunders Legacy Fund and all fans in attendance will receive a Flip Saunders commemorative coin as part of the evening’s events. The coin is in keeping with one of Saunders’ trademarks, the annual creation of a new team coin each season during his time with the Wolves. He would then give the coins away randomly to people he encountered.

“Flip meant so much to our organization as a coach, but he meant so much more to all of us as a friend,” says Glen Taylor, Timberwolves owner. “His impact on our organization and what he meant to the Minnesota basketball community is something that will always be with us.”

Saunders compiled a 427-392 record during 12 seasons coaching the Wolves across two stints. He became president of basketball operations in 2013, but was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma and died in October 2015.

“Flip not only had a passion for the Timberwolves, but for basketball in the state of Minnesota,” says Debbie Saunders, Flip’s widow. “We are incredibly grateful to the Timberwolves for memorializing Flip in such a moving way and having his memory live on inside Target Center forever.”
