The Minnesota Gophers will unveil yet another helmet design Saturday during its Big Ten opening football game against Maryland.
The “Salute to Service” helmets will be white with six decals displayed with a patriotic center stripe.
The Minnesota National Guard logo will be at the front of the helmet. The logo on the back belongs to the USS Minnesota, a fast-attack submarine commissioned in 2013. Along the stripe in between will be for logos recognizing a unit or subsection of the Minnesota National Guard.
Coincidentally or not, the white helmets match in color those worn by the 1967 football team that is celebrating the 50-year anniversary of its Big Ten championship this weekend.
That 8-2 team finished 6-1 in the conference and was undefeated at home and in rivalry trophy games against Iowa, Michigan and Wisconsin. Head Coach P.J. Fleck says the current team needs to embrace the university’s proud football past.
“We talked to (the 2017 team) today about embracing your past to create your future,” he says in a statement. “We want to bring the championships back to Minnesota. That doesn’t happen overnight. … We want to make sure, when the 1967 team watches our game, they are inspired. It brings them back to their day.”
